Welcome to Mindful Steps Therapy CIC

Exclusion damages confidence, deepens trauma, and increases vulnerability.
Too many children are punished for their needs instead of being understood.

The Problem

1. SEN and Exclusion

Children with Special Educational Needs are up to five times more likely to face permanent exclusion than their peers without SEN.

2. Exclusion and Youth Custody

Among looked-after children (in care) who have received a custodial sentence by age 24, a staggering 92% had SEN, and 18% had previously been excluded from school.

3. Families Left Unsupported

While precise national percentages are harder to find, qualitative reports highlight how families of children with SEN are frequently dismissed, blamed, or ignored by the system a systemic failure repeatedly called out by parents and advocacy groups across the UK.

You Knew Something Wasn’t Right

You noticed the signs.
Your child was struggling.
The school told you to wait.
Now you’re being blamed.
And your child still isn’t getting the help they need.

Mindful Steps Therapy CIC steps in early.
Before confidence is lost.
Before behaviour is misunderstood.
Before exclusion becomes permanent.

We support families of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Our mission is clear: Inclusion before exclusion.

What We Do

Mindful Steps Therapy CIC supports families and schools to prevent exclusion and build inclusion.

We focus on the root causes of SEND and how children and young people’s behaviour is shaped by psychological, emotional, social, and environmental experiences.

Our work includes:

  • Preventing school exclusions and keeping children with SEN supported in education
  • Advocacy for children and young people with SEND who are at risk of being overlooked or exploited
  • Coaching for parents to build confidence and use their voice effectively
  • Trauma-informed and culturally sensitive support for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic families
  • Training for schools and professionals to recognise SEN and see behaviour as communication, not defiance
  • Guidance for families navigating SEND processes and understanding their rights

At the heart of everything we do is one principle:
Inclusion must come before exclusion.

What Makes Us Different

  • We act before school exclusion happens.
  • We centre the emotional well-being of parents, not just the needs of the child.
  • We speak openly about how race, class, and trauma shape SEND support.
  • We stand with families who are tired of chasing help that never comes.
  • We bring a rare mix of insight from probation, health and social policy, and parenting — while also living with late-diagnosed learning differences.

Parents, you’re not overthinking.
You’re not imagining it.
And you’re not alone.

Ready to take the next step

You don’t have to do this alone.
Take the next step today and discover how Mindful Steps Therapy CIC can help your family.
